A Home Reno is an exciting thing! Here is a checklist of a few things to consider doing before you start the process!
1. Do Your Research
Get an idea of what you want done. Of course when you find your renovator, he/she will be able to help you with this, but its a good idea to come prepared with an general plan of what you want. Some of the things you might want to ask yourself might be if you want hardwood floors or tile, granite countertops or laminate, high hat lights or a fixture, do you want to move any walls or keep everything in place, etc.
2. Get Prices from Multiple Contractors
Here is where you price out the job. Getting prices from several companies gives you the opportunity to choose which you prefer to work with.
3. Budget
Now that you've been given your price. Here's where you budget and determine your plan to pay for your renovation. Are you paying with cash, card, check, loan, etc.
We recommend you budget a little extra for what we call "Job Extras". You may find that during the renovation, you may want to add a little more than intended and that costs money!
4. Set A Time Frame
Are you looking to complete your renovation before a specific event? Maybe you have a big party you are throwing or you want the baby's room done before he/she is born. It is important to plan with enough time in advance and be clear with your contractor when you would like to have the project completed by.
Remember to give yourself a little wiggle room for any potential "Job Extras"!
5. Talk with Your Friends!
There is a very good chance that you have friends or family that have done some recent work on their homes. Grab a drink or invite them over dinner and ask about their experience. What would they have done differently, what came up that they didn't expect to, is there anything they recommend you look out for or anything you should do before you start?
